Fence Questions and Answers for New Orleans Homeowners

Short answers to common fence questions in New Orleans: post depth in soft soil, concrete or gravel, staining, painting vinyl, termites, gates and more.

Short answers to the questions New Orleans homeowners bring us most. Longer guides on cost, permits, repairs and neighbors are linked at the bottom of the page.

How deep should fence posts be set?

Deep enough for the height of the fence and the softness of the ground. There is no frost line to get below in New Orleans. A common rule is to bury about a third of the post, and we go deeper and wider for 6-foot privacy fences, gate posts and very soft lots, because wind load and wet soil are what move posts here.

Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?

Concrete, in most New Orleans yards. Soft, wet soil does not hold a post by itself, so the footing has to do the work. We shape the top of the concrete so rain runs away from the post. Gravel alone is rarely enough here, and foam is not a good match for gates or tall solid fences that face storm wind.

How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?

Until the wood has dried out. In this humidity that can take from several weeks to a few months for pressure-treated pine. Sprinkle water on a board. When it soaks in, the wood is ready. When it beads up, wait longer.

How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?

It varies with length, height and the state of the wood, and we do not quote a set figure. Have it listed as a separate line on your estimate.

Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?

Yes, if they are stainless or coated for exterior use. Plain screws rust quickly in this air and stain the boards. Use stainless on cedar, since other metals leave black marks around the screw.

Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?

It can, with a paint made for vinyl, but you will be repainting from then on. Keep to a color near the original. Dark colors absorb heat and can warp panels in a Louisiana summer. Wash it first, because the green film that grows on vinyl here is usually algae, not fading.

I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?

Rebuild them. A wide double gate for an RV or trailer, or a boat, puts heavy load on two posts, and ordinary fence posts in soft ground will not carry it. We install larger gate posts in bigger footings and redo the panel beside each.

Does a new fence raise my property taxes?

That is decided by your parish assessor. A fence is minor compared with the house and the land.

Will termites eat my fence?

They can. Formosan termites are common in New Orleans and go after wood in contact with soil. Posts rated for ground contact, boards kept off the dirt and no mulch piled against the fence all help. Metal and vinyl are not at risk.
