The installation itself usually takes 2 to 3 working days, spread across about a week so the concrete at the posts can cure. Before that comes the estimate, any permit or historic district approval, the Louisiana 811 notice and our schedule.
What happens, in order
- A free visit to measure, followed by a written quote.
- Permit or commission approval, if your address needs one.
- Louisiana 811 request, at least two full business days before digging.
- Old fence removed, holes dug, posts set and left to cure.
- Rails, panels or chain link fabric, then gates. Clean-up and a walk of the finished fence with you.
What slows a fence job down in New Orleans?
- Rain. Afternoon storms fill post holes and stop concrete work.
- Hurricane season, from June through November, when a storm can halt work and then flood every fence company with repair calls.
- Historic district review, which adds time before work can start.
- Narrow side alleys where everything is carried in and dug by hand.
- Roots, buried brick and old footings.
- Custom gates and materials that have to be ordered.
We are getting a dog in three weeks and have no fence. What is fastest?
Call now. Some of that time is taken by the rule check and the Louisiana 811 notice. Stock materials such as chain link and standard wood panels are quickest. If the full yard will not be ready, we can enclose a smaller dog run first and complete the fence afterward.
We are putting in a pool. Fence before or after?
Some of each. The pool contractor needs a gap to get equipment in, so that stretch waits until the digging is over. Then the whole barrier has to be complete and inspected before the pool can be used.
My association says fix the fallen panels by Monday and my contractor keeps delaying. Can a handyman patch it?
Yes. A handyman patch on a fence you own is your call and will usually satisfy the deadline. Read your contract first, and let the contractor know in writing what was patched and why, so the final repair and the invoice stay clear.
